MEADVILLE — Led by a game-winning double from Morgan Knapp, the Franklin County Lady Softball Bulldogs collected a clutch come- from-behind, 4-3 victory over Richland Thursday night.
Franklin County (10-2, 6-0) moved into first place in the Region 7-3A slow pitch softball standings with the win. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh before plating three consecutive hits to load the bases for Knapp’s big swing.
“I’m proud of the girls,” said Lady Bulldog head coach Dana Smith, who is anchored by her husband Mickey Smith as an assistant. “We never gave up. Our girls fought for this one.”
Kacey Smith, FC’s junior shortstop provided a spark as well, going 3-for3 with three singles at the plate and turning in some fancy defensive maneuvers. The Lady Bulldogs’ infield recorded no errors in the contest.
“Kacey really hit well tonight, and Morgan is a tough one. She was on deck after we tied the game,” said Coach Smith. “She stepped it up a notch.”
Knapp, a junior outfielder, went 3-for-3, collecting two singles and the decisive extra-base hit.
Mildred Starks collected the victory on the mound for Franklin County in relief of Desiree Buie.
Vintrice Briggs, the Lady Bulldogs’ speedy outfielder collected an RBI double and a single. Senior playmaker Courtney Reid plated two singles.
Reaching base safely for FCHS was Taylor Stewart, Latorya Griffin, Vandrianna Norman and Buie.
“We’ve got four district games remaining,” said Smith. “Our goal is to be undefeated in district. We’ve just got to take it one game at a time.”
