NATCHEZ – Services for Joseph Stephen Zuccaro Jr., 84, who died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at his residence, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Basilica with the Rev. David O’Connor officiating.
Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until service time Thursday at the church.
Mr. Zuccaro was born Nov. 24, 1923, in Natchez, the son of Joseph Stephen Zuccaro Sr. and Marie Cecilia Kincke Zuccaro.
A lifetime resident of Natchez, he was a member of St. Mary Basilica and will be remembered as an outstanding attorney and public servant in Adams County and in the state of Mississippi. He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School, in Natchez, and the University of Mississippi School of Law. He served in World War II as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corp and began his law practice, in Natchez, in 1949.
During his long and distinctive legal career, he served on the Natchez-Adams County Airport Commission, attorney for the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Natchez, attorney for the Adams County Board of Supervisors, as well as, the Claiborne County Board of Supervisors. He represented the Board of Trustees of Natchez Regional Medical Center, served as Chancery Judge for the counties of Claiborne, Jefferson, Adams and Wilkinson and as a Justice of the Mississippi State Supreme Court.
Mr. Zuccaro was also a member and chairman of the Mississippi Oil and Gas Board. He was a member of the Adams County and Mississippi State Bar Associations. He will be remembered as a longtime public servant, active community leader and friend to many people across the State of Mississippi and the United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Anthony Zuccaro; and wife, Dorothy Fay Cade Zuccaro.
Survivors include his son, Philip Joseph Zuccaro and wife, Denise; one granddaughter, Christina Fay Zuccaro, all of Natchez; one sister, Marie Z. Perkins; one brother, Anthony Edward Zuccaro Sr., all of Natchez; and a number of nieces, nephews, friends, associates and other relatives.
Pallbearers will be Fred Callon, Claude Pintard Jr., James Biglane, Wayne Finley, J. Walter Brown and Philip Carby.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Kenneth Stubbs, the staff of Internal Medicine Associates, his close friends and associates.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Cathedral School Development Fund, St. Mary Basilica or Catholic Charities.
