NATCHEZ — This events holds promise for great family fun, decorative outfits and unavoidable competition as dogs come out to show their best — and for a good cause.

The Natchez Adams County Humane Society fundraiser Bark in the Park is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grand Village of Natchez Indians and it’s one of the major fundraisers of the year.

The humane society raises funds each month to pay for costs of feeding, vaccinating and boarding cats and dogs and while each benefit is noteworthy, this is one of the biggest, humane society board member Nan Garrison said.

“This is the big one that involves the kids and the community and I have people ask me all year long when this is,” Garrison said.

The entire event boasts a host of competitions — Mr. and Mrs. NACHS, where only dogs adopted from the shelter can participate, most handsome, most beautiful, best tail wag, cutest puppy, most talented, best costume and best smile.

Each competition requires a $2 registration fee.

Out of all, Garrison said the costume contest generates the most excitement.

“They dress them up like you wouldn’t believe,” Garrison said.

Trophies are given to the dogs that win each competition.

Humane society director Pat Cox said the volunteer six-panel judge is responsible for choosing the winners.

All dogs are required to be on a leash.

Cox said last year the event brought in great funds and people.

“They did really well,” she said.

She estimated $6,000 were raised and about 200 people participated in the event.

Garrison encouraged people to come out for the family-oriented event.

“This is the big one that involves kids and the community,” Garrison said, of all the fundraisers. “It’s just being in the park with the family and the kids.

“It’s good healthy wholesome fun for a good cause.”

Humane society T-shirts and magnets will be sold as well.

General admission is $4 for adults and $1 for children

Drinks, hotdogs and nachos will be for sale for attendees.
