Land bank seems full in our area

For an area not considered densely populated, Natchez-Adams County seems to be experiencing a “land crisis.”

Larger cities would kill for the available land our community has, yet our community struggles to locate two seemingly critical, yet simple, sites.

After years of head scratching and kicking at the dirt, the Natchez-Adams County area still has no good plan for where to locate a much-promised, little acted-on recreation complex.

Beyond recreation, though, our community is also struggling to locate adequate land for an industrial development site.

Didn’t the county once own developable land at the site of the former Stewart’s Orchids on Foster Mound Road and near the Adams County Airport — slated for a prison development?

Earlier this week, members of the Natchez-Adams County Economic Development Authority said the entity was seeking land for an industrial park.

The county has been banking on using the former Belwood Country Club site, near the Adams County Port, for such a site. But the Belwood site frequently floods and needs significant work before it could be developed.

The last time we checked, Natchez-Adams County had the same amount of land that it had a few years ago, even 100 years ago. So perhaps we don’t have a land crisis as much as a communication crisis.

City, county, school district and EDA representatives should meet with a list of land each owns and see if they can find some common ground for each other’s needs.

Who knows, maybe one man’s flooded field is another’s dream spot?
