VIDALIA – Services for Mamie Etta West “Granmommie” Savoy, 101, of Vidalia, who died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at Lady of the Lake Hospital, in Baton Rouge, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, in Vidalia, with the Rev. Barry Dennis and Brother Clyde Ray Webber officiating.
Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, in Natchez, under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home in Vidalia.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 11:00 to 1 p.m. Saturday, both at the funeral home.
Mrs. Savoy was born May 10, 1907, in Chamberlin, La., the daughter of Joseph West and Celestine McLin West. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, being able to grow anything. She was quite well-known for her quilting and cooking.
Mrs. Savoy enjoyed her children and their families and guided all with encouragement and keeping the family unit intact.
She and her late husband, Capt. Jimmy “Gilbert” Savoy Sr., began their life together in 1925 when they were married at Whiskey Bay, La. Their union would produce five children. In 1937, they moved their family to Ferriday where he worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, eventually moving to Vidalia in 1938. The union would last 59 years.
Mrs. Savoy was an active member of Vidalia United Methodist Church until her recent fail in health. Her incredible memory and the stories she could recall during her 101 years were an inspiration to all who she came into contact with. She was a giving and gentle lady who will be greatly missed by a multitude of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son, Gilbert Savoy; an infant daughter, Mildred Savoy; two granddaughters, Rebecca Walker and Kelly Savoy; one son-in-law, G.W. Whitehead; two daughters-in-law, Ann Hoggatt Savoy and Hattie Scott Savoy; two brother; and three sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Etta Lee Bryan and husband, Jack, both of Baker, La. and Kathleen Savoy Whitehead of Vidalia; two sons, Clyde Joseph Savoy, of Vidalia, and Curtis C. Savoy of Ferriday; 16 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 42 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be George “Web” Whitehead, Jimmy Savoy, Danny Savoy, Andy Bryan, Brad Bryan, Curtis “Bubba” Savoy and Joe Savoy.
