Natchez — Originally from Texas, Dolly Smith moved to Natchez 25 years ago.

“Initially, I became interested in pottery as a hobby.” Smith said. “I began taking classes about five years ago, and through the years, my love of pottery has grown from a hobby to a passion.

“After three years of instruction, I decided to open a private studio which allows for greater freedom of expression.”

Smith enjoys creating a variety of work, including vases, teapots, crosses and bottles.

“Each piece of pottery is unique because it is fired with a number of layered glazes that give each piece its own identity,” Smith said. “I never write down what glazes I use,” Smith said. “This technique creates a ‘one-of-a-kind’ piece every time.

“With each firing, I am amazed at the new colors and textures achieved.”

All of Smith’s pottery is high-fired which makes it food, microwave and dishwasher safe.

“Handmade pottery is truly a labor of love from my heart and hands,” Smith said. “And each time one of my pieces goes to a new home, I am honored.”

Smith’s work is on display at the ArtsNatchez Gallery located at 110 North Union St. in downtown Natchez.
