MEADVILLE — For Shaniquia Cameron it was only fitting that on her senior night she made the game winning hit to spark Franklin County’s celebration. Cameron produced in the clutch with a game winning double to beat rival North Pike 8-7 and lead Franklin County to its sixth come-from-behind victory this season.
“I was praying on that one,” said Cameron of the game winner. “I’m just happy we came back and won.”
Led by three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Bulldogs (16-4) won in thrilling fashion.
Down 7-5, Franklin County got leadoff singles from Nicole White and Kacey Smith, before freshmen Latroya Griffin doubled both runners in to tie the game. Two batters later, Cameron sent Griffin home with her monster smash to outfield.
“We made some mistakes, but the girls kept their heads up and were able to get some clutch hits in the end,” Franklin County head coach Dana Smith said. “This was a big win for our seniors and our whole team.”
Before the game, the team paid tribute to its seniors in Courtney Reid, Taylor Stewart and Cameron. Each was honored with flowers and introduced with there parents.
North Pike attempted to spoil the ceremonies, by collecting an early 4-0 lead. Franklin County bounced back in the bottom half of the second frame, plating five runs on four hits. The Lady Jaguars tied the game in the third off a Kelsey Lord RBI double, and took back the lead in the sixth.
“We didn’t give up,” Smith said, “We just found a way to win.”
Griffin led the team with a double and two singles, while Stewart and Cameron each had a double and a single for an RBI. Junior shortstop Kacey Smith plated two singles, as did Morgan Knapp and Courtney Reid.
Reaching base safely for the Lady Bulldogs were Desiree Buie, Nicole White, and KeKe Collins.
The winning pitcher for Franklin County was Mildred Starks.
For North Pike, coached by Sonya Wallace, Lauren Wallace led with a double and two singles. Shelby Abdul Hudi had two singles. Summa Brown and Kelsey Lord each plated a double.
Franklin County travels to Bogue Chitto Thursday evening for a varsity contest beginning at 5.
