VIDALIA — The Ferriday man whose flight from an officer three weeks ago ended in a shooting that left both him and the officer wounded was arrested again this week.
Vondell A. Hawkins, 20, 807 Second St., was arrested Tuesday on charges of two counts of theft greater than $300, criminal damage to property and aggravated assault.
According to a statement from the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office, Hawkins allegedly stole two cell phones from a Ferriday business and a computer and computer accessories valued at more than $2,000 from a Vidalia home.
The store surveillance camera at the Ferriday business reportedly caught Hawkins on camera, and CPSO investigator David Hedrick was able to recover the computer and its components at Hawkins’ residence, officials said.
Hawkins was charged with criminal damage to property and aggravated assault in a separate incident, in which he allegedly threw a brick through a vehicle’s windshield and threatened the vehicle’s owner with a hammer, officials said.
He is currently being detained at the Concordia Parish Correctional Facility with no bond set.
Hawkins was booked at the Vidalia Police Department in September after he allegedly bolted from the station after a third party took him there.
Police Chief Ronnie G. “Tapper” Hendricks said police were planning to question Hawkins about a theft at the time of the incident.
Hawkins was pursued on foot by a Vidalia officer, and the pursuit ultimately ended with Hawkins injured by gunfire in the leg and grazed on the arm, and the officer, Investigator Randy Stockman, wounded by a bullet in the foot.
The Vidalia Police are waiting until the Louisiana State Police finish an investigation into the shooting to discuss the timeline of what happened and what the players did leading up to the shooting, Hendricks said.
Stockman will return to work as soon as the Louisiana State Police clear him of any wrongdoing, Hendricks said.
In the September incident, Hawkins was charged with unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, aggravated assault with a firearm and aggravated criminal damage to property.
He was released on a $5,000 property bond Sept. 16.
