VIDALIA — Polls will be open today to determine one judge’s race and who will become the next Seventh Judicial District Court district attorney.

Three men, Brad Burget, Andy Magoun and Ronnie McMillin, are on the ballot for district attorney, and incumbent John Johnson is not seeking reelection.

In a special election — to fill the seat on the third circuit court of appeals that Judge Glenn Gremillion vacated when he retired earlier this year — three candidates, Shannon James Gremillion, Triston Knoll and Loren M. Lampert are vying for the position.

District justices of the peace and constables are also on the ballot.

A special Republican primary for the 5th U.S. Congressional District, which was originally scheduled for Sept. 6 but was postponed due to Hurricane Gustav, is also up for the vote. In it, incumbent Rodney Alexander will face 25-year-old challenger Andrew Clack.

Because there is no Democratic, independent or otherwise affiliated candidate, the Republican primary will decide the congressional election.

A generally recognized photo ID such as a driver’s license or a Louisiana Special ID is required to vote.

For voters who do not have a photo ID, they must bring a utility bill, payroll check or government document with their name and address on it. They will also be required to sign an affidavit attesting to the truthfulness of their claims of identity.
