CLINTON, La. — Trinity Episcopal put its undefeated record and No. 2 ranking in Class AA on the line against Silliman Institute on Friday night.

With District 3-AA games against River Oaks and Riverfield upcoming, the last thing the Saints could afford to do is get caught looking ahead. Especially with this being the Wildcats’ homecoming game.

Despite amassing just 12 first downs and 221 yards of total offense, Trinity Episcopal defeated Silliman 35-12 to improve to 8-0 on the season. And the Saints can thank their special teams and defense for picking up the slack in this game.

Trinity’s touchdowns on offense were on a 1-yard run by Wells Middleton midway through the first quarter and a 6-yard run by Kent King in the fourth quarter. However, that wasn’t the only way those two players got into the end zone. King scored on a 50-yard punt return, which was followed by Middleton’s 17-yard fumble recovery in the second quarter.

Brandon Daggs gave the Saints’ defense its second touchdown of the game on a 20-yard interception return in the third quarter.

Silliman (3-3) hung tough with Trinity in the first half. Nick Ohlinger scored on an 84-yard run late in the first quarter that made it a 7-6 game and Cody Donze had a 6-yard touchdown run with less than four minutes to go in the first half to put Wildcats down only 21-12 at halftime.

But the Wildcats hurt themselves with a lack of a passing game — 1-for-11 for 12 yards — and five turnovers. They were held to 165 yards of total offense.

Centreville 35, Amite School Center 7

LIBERTY — Cliff Hurst and Beau Field combined for 157 yards rushing and three touchdowns as the Tigers defeated the Rebels in District 5-AA action Friday night.

Hurst had 10 carries for 103 yards and one touchdown while Field added five carries for 54 yards and two touchdowns for Centreville (6-2, 3-1). Adam Perry and Hunter Brabham each had touchdown runs of their own. Kyle Brown completed six-of-eight passes for 104 yards.

The Tigers put Amite School Center (0-8, 0-5) away with a 22-point second quarter. The Rebels were held to eight first downs and 153 yards of total offense. Billy Waddell led the Tigers’ defense with eight tackles and Patrick Love added five tackles.

Riverdale 44, WCCA 36

COUSHATTA, La. — The Rams and the Rebels squared off Friday night in a game between District 6-A opponents trying to keep their very slim playoff chances alive.

Unfortunately, WCCA could not stop Riverdale’s passing game or running back Bryan Condet as the Rebels rallied for an eight-point win and effectively ended the Rams’ playoff hopes.

Andrew Driggers was the star of this game as he completed 22-of-45 passes for 439 yards despite throwing just one touchdown and three interceptions, one of which was returned 31 yards by Tip McKenzie for a touchdown that gave WCCA (3-5, 1-5) what appeared to be a commanding 28-6 lead with 5:48 to go until halftime.

But the combination of Driggers and Condet running the ball wore down the Rams and led to the Rebels’ comeback win. It started with a 9-yard run by Driggers and a 1-yard run by Condet in the final 5:07 of the first half that cut the Rams’ lead to 28-22.

Driggers then scored on an 11-yard run and Condet scored on a two-point conversion run that gave Riverdale (3-4, 3-3) a 30-28 lead with 6:56 left in the third quarter.

After WCCA regained the lead on an 82-yard pass from Todd Gonda to McKenzie early in the fourth quarter, Riverdale got the lead tied the score at 36-36 on Condet’s 1-yard touchdown run. Condet scored the game-winning touchdown on a 33-yard run and Driggers added a two-point conversion pass to Colton Warren with 2:01 remaining.

The Rams’ running game was held in check in the game. They were held to just 29 yards on the ground. Gonda completed five-of-15 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns.
