Bears focus on themselves, not on defending district champs

Jonesville — Block High may be facing the defending District 3-A champions Friday, but the Bears are not focusing on their opponent.
Instead, coach Benny Vault has the team working on themselves.
“We’re just working on some things that we needed to correct from last week,” he said. “Our mental focus, the way we come into the game.”
Block defeated Montgomery, 36-8, Friday, allowing Montgomery’s only touchdown in the first series of the game.
Vault was proud of that, but not so happy about the Bears’ offensive play.
“Defensively we were aggressive, and we seemed like we covered who we were supposed to cover,” he said.
“Offensively we had some work to do. We had some penalties, some illegal procedures, false starts, and that’s not supposed to be happening this time of the year.”
Block will travel to Olla, La., to take on LaSalle on Friday, a team the Bears fell to 40-7 last year on the way to the Tigers’ district title.
Vault said most of last season’s roster is returning for LaSalle, and its spread offense will be difficult to contain.
“They’ve got speed, and they’re real big and strong,” he said. “They have a real good little back in Kenny Smith so the plan is man-to-man coverage. We will just try to put some pressure on them at the point of attack.”
While he has shown his team film on LaSalle, Vault will still keep practice geared toward home.
“We don’t focus much on the other team, we just work on what we do,” he said. “We try to scheme just based upon what the other team gives us. That’s my philosophy, just work on what I do and try to be the best at it.”
