NATCHEZ — With a 14-7 lead after the end of the first quarter, it looked as though the Cathedral Green Wave would hang with undefeated Puckett. Unfortunately for the Green Wave, Puckett scored 28 straight points in the second quarter en route to a 57-14 win.
Cathedral (3-5, 3-5) took an early 7-0 lead on a 54-yard pass from Preston Edwards to Daniel Jenkins.
Puckett scored, but Cathedral answered with a 38-yard pass from Edwards to Daniel Huffines that gave the Green Wave a 14-7 lead.
“We played good in the first quarter,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “We knew we would have to match them score for score in the game.”
The Wolves scored on the first play of the second quarter via a 15-yard touchdown run by Antwon Rawls and tied the game at 14.
Puckett then scored three more times in the quarter while keeping Cathedral at bay and took a 35-14 lead into the half.
“I was proud of the way we came out of the locker room,” Beesley said. “We turned the ball over three straight times and it hurt us.”
The Wolves scored twice more in the third quarter on touchdown runs by Palmer and Rawls and led 49-14 by the end of the quarter.
The Green Wave struggled and gave up yet another touchdown in the fourth quarter to the Wolves that ended the game on a sour note.
Palmer led all rushers with 229 yards on 18 carries with three touchdowns for Puckett.
Edwards was the leading passer with a 9-for-25 effort for 122 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.
Jenkins caught two passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns to lead all receivers in the game.
“We will face another back just as good as Palmer next week,” Beesley said.
“Our district is full of great runners.”
Cathedral will face Pisgah on the road next week.
