Bill Hurst would rather we just didn’t talk anymore about what happened in small-town Centreville Friday night.

But every good thing has its downside. And this time, Coach Hurst, you’ll just have to deal with the compliments.

You’re a coaching legend now. Not that you weren’t before, but Friday night put it in the history books.

We know, we know, it was the players who did the hard work, not you. Agreed, the students played a vital role. But players without a coach simply don’t move the ball.

So, whether you will admit it or not, Friday night’s achievement was about you.

Only two other football coaches in Mississippi have ever tallied 300 wins. And neither showed the career-long loyalty to one team like you have.

It’s an astounding achievement, and all of Southwest Mississippi should be proud of you.

But, like you’ve said, the numbers mean very little in the grand scheme of things.

It’s only a game. And the 300th win is really the same as the 299th win.

We aren’t proud of the numbers, Coach Hurst.

We are proud of the man.

You’ve touched countless lives in 32 years. You’ve been an extraordinary role model. You’ve been a rock to lean on, a man to trust.

You, Coach Hurst, have been what so many young students needed. And you’ve done it well.

That’s why we hope you’ll take us all the way to 400.
