School board needs unity, continuity

The far chair on the end at Natchez-Adams School Board meetings has been revolving for some time.
First, board member James Coleman left the seat open after being arrested on embezzlement charges.
Then, Matilda Stephens resigned from the seat to pursue other interests.
The seat sat vacant for a bit, until Tuesday night when the Natchez Board of Alderman appointed Dr. Benny Wright to fill it.
Dr. Wright comes to the table with a list of goals, including improving reading skills and raising teacher pay.
Both goals are desirable and, we hope, attainable.
But Dr. Wright also comes to the table with a bit of baggage. Earlier this year he publicly asked that Superintendent Anthony Morris be removed from his position. He passed out a list of unproven “facts” supporting the call for Morris’ job.
But Dr. Wright is no longer pushing for a new superintendent, he said earlier this week. He realizes such action is a divisive move that won’t help the students.
We hope that opinion doesn’t revolve like Dr. Wright’s new chair.
Whether Morris is the right man for the job or not, our community gets nowhere by demanding someone be fired without first gathering all the facts — something Dr. Wright’s committee didn’t do last spring.
We are happy to have someone in the seat at the end, and we hope Dr. Wright can achieve his goal of bringing the board, the community and the district together for the good of the children.
