Win or go home for Ferriday

FERRIDAY — Ferriday will be fighting for its playoff life Friday.
With his team winless in four games of 2A District 2 play, coach Freddie Harrison has made that statement quite often recently.
But with just one game left in the season and one more chance for the Trojans (4-5, 0-4) to get into the playoffs, this time he means it.
“No doubt about it, no questions, no hesitations,” he said. “It’s win or go home. That’s the kind of attitude we’re going to have. We’ve got to make sure that we cross every t and dot every i.”
No pressure, of course.
Except that Harrison said his young team already understands the situation coming into the game at home against Lake Providence (4-5, 1-2).
It is the Trojans’ last chance for a district victory and their last shot for a boost in the LHSAA power rankings.
“We don’t talk about it. We just go about our everyday, regular routine,” Harrison said. “Now to actually be here at this point, there’s no pressure on the kids. They want the playoffs more than I want the playoffs. That’s the good thing about it.”
In order to have a chance, the Trojans must guard against the Panthers’ explosive spread offense, led by a quick, athletic quarterback.
Along with playing fundamental defense, Harrison said his offense won’t change much but will focus on controlling the football.
“They’re kind of similar to us,” Harrison said of the Panthers. “But they have one district win, and we don’t have any. That’s the key right there. Last year we were undefeated in district — this year we haven’t defeated anybody.”
Harrison said he knew weeks ago that the Trojans could be in this position.
But even if they don’t win, he said it’s a good lesson for his young team to build on for next season.
“It really is a good experience with them being so young and inexperienced and not battle-tested,” he said. “It gives them a good learning curve to understand a pressure game. You wouldn’t even think about it, but some teams don’t have the opportunity to be in games like this. That’s great for them.”
