CAMPTI, La. — Having already secured a berth in the Class 1A playoffs, Block was looking for a win Thursday night over Lakeview which would possibly move the Bears into the top 10 in the power ratings.
After a slow start, Block pulled away thanks to a 20-point second quarter that started with a great defensive play by Preston Bowman as the Bears went on to defeat the Gators 34-12 to end the regular season with a 6-3 record.
Even though the Class 2A Gators went into the game with a 1-8 record, Block head coach Benny Vault Jr. figured a win over a team from a higher classification would get his team, currently 11th in the most recent Class 1A power ratings, even higher.
“We get 12 points for the win. We’re in pretty good shape to get in at No. 9 or 10,” Vault said. “I took the starters out early. We tried to get out of here injury free.”
After Lakeview running back Rodney Washington scored on a 4-yard run midway through the first quarter, Block scored the next 34 points.
Curdarius Johnson completed two passes, both for touchdowns. The first was a 21-yarder to Ladarrius Collins with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Chris Collins made the extra point that gave the Bears the lead for good. He was 4-of-5 on extra points for the game. He added a 29-yard scoring pass to Johnson in the second quarter.
Just when it looked like the Gators were about to retake the lead early in the second quarter, Bowman intercepted a pass and returned it 101 yards for a touchdown that kept the momentum in Block’s favor.
