NATCHEZ — It’s been little more than one year since Natchez resident Pete Jackson, 52, was murdered, and in less than a week two new indictments have been handed out in the case.
While the indictments are new, neither of the indictees are new to the case.
In September 2007 Jackson’s live-in girlfriend Mary McQuarters was arrested and charged with murder one day after his death.
In March, McQuarters, 53, was indicted by a grand jury on the same charges.
At the same time, though it was not previously reported, Patrick Conner, 48, was indicted by a grand jury for acting as an accessory to Jackson’s murder.
However, in the past week both Conner and McQuarters have been newly indicted.
Recently a grand jury re-indicted Conner. The grand jury changed his accessory indictment to an indictment for murder.
Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said newly obtained evidence was the reason for the change in indictments.
Godbold also said Conner and McQuarters are related and were living together at the time of the murder.
On Sunday, Conner was booked into the Adams County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
McQuarters was also re-indicted, however, her indictment was not changed from murder.
District Attorney Ronnie Harper said McQuarters was re-indicted so that she and Conner could be listed on the same indictment, which has since happened, in order to have a more efficient trial.
McQuarters was booked into the Adams County Jail on Wednesday and has since been released on a $50,000 bond.
On Thursday, Harper said he did not know if the original indictments had been dismissed.
But if they haven’t, it’s only a matter of time.
“We will not go forward on the original indictments,” Harper said.
The case is not expected to go to trial until March.
