Port needs new plan for crane

You probably never drive by one of Adams County’s most important means of transportation.

But just because the Adams County Port is not easily visible to most local residents doesn’t mean there aren’t important things happening there.

And right now, money has brought one important project to a standstill. One of the two docks at the port is in need of a crane that would reportedly bolster business a bit.

In 2007 the port began efforts to acquire grants to fund the construction of the crane. And this year, they received a grant.

But the grant wasn’t enough to cover the costs of the two construction bids the county received.

The lowest bid was for $1.9 million.

But since the time the bids came in, the U.S. economy has changed.

Steel is no longer at astonishingly high prices. And construction companies are likely in need of work.

The county and the port commission should consider re-bidding the project. The numbers might just come back easier to swallow.

This crane is an important project, and the county must pursue it. Now is a great time to hunt a good deal.
