NATCHEZ — Roadwork on Canal Street is a result of extra money left over from the $1.3 million overlay project.

Mayor Jake Middleton said City Engineer David Gardner wanted to fix the portion of Canal Street near Orleans Street if any money was left over.

“Everybody’s been complaining about it so we’re trying to get it fixed. We’re trying to stretch our dollars.”

The railroad track is currently being pulled up and on Tuesday, Canal Street was shut down to a one-way street in that area.

The overlay of Homochitto, Franklin, Martin Luther King Jr. and St. Catherine streets saved enough money for Jefferson and Junkin streets to get new asphalt, as well.

Middleton said Canal Street is eligible for the leftover funds because it is a gaming road and the money was appropriated specifically for gaming roads.

The money was appropriated by the state to the city in May.
