NATCHEZ — In the midst of the driving rain and howling winds of Tuesday’s storm, a group of neighbors on Eastwood Road fought to free a woman trapped in her car by a falling tree.

Armed with an ax, a chainsaw and even their bare hands, neighbors broke, cut and chopped their way to the car’s door, allowing paramedics to access the vehicle.

Pam Cann lives near the scene and said she got to the trapped woman only minutes after the accident.

Cann identified the driver of the car as Courtney Moore.

Cann waited with Moore until the other neighbors started their extrication effort.

“She was just driving and the tree fell on her car,” she said.

Cann, a nurse at Natchez Regional Medical Center, said while she did not know the woman’s condition, the woman was alert and responsive.

Once paramedics were able to reach the vehicle Moore was loaded on to a stretcher and then into a waiting ambulance.

While her condition was unknown, one paramedic told Cann, “Call her parents and tell them she’ll be OK.”
