Early deficit too much for Saints to overcome

NATCHEZ — Brandon Daggs and Jordan Dossett combined to make seven three-pointers, but it was not enough as the Trinity Episcopal Saints lost to the Hillcrest Christian School Cougars 77-67 Tuesday night.

Daggs connected on three three-pointers and finished with 19 points. Dossett made four three-pointers and scored 14 points. But it was the first quarter that proved to be the difference in the outcome of the game.

Led by Austin Hartzog, Emanuel Ezejioso and Cameron Pounds, the Cougars dominated the action in the first quarter en route to a commanding 25-12 lead. The Saints had to play catch up the rest of the game, but they could not get on a big run to get themselves a chance to pull out the win.

Hartzog led all scorers with 29 points while Ezejioso had 19 points and Pounds chipped in with 13 points for Hillcrest Christian. Andrew Johnson had 13 points and Givonni Dent added nine points for Trinity Episcopal.

Block 67, Tensas Parish 63

JONESVILLE, La. — Preston Bowman and Jerome Jefferson had outstanding all-around performances for Block in its hard-fought win over Tensas Parish Tuesday night.

Bowman led the 2-1 Bears in scoring with 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists while Jefferson had 13 points, 11 assists and five rebounds.

The game went back and forth between the two teams and by the time the third quarter was over, the Panthers and the Bears were tied at 45-45. But Block won the game by outscoring Tensas Parish 22-18 in the fourth quarter.

Corey Brown led Tensas Parish (0-9) with 15 points and Steve Cephus had 12 points.

Hillcrest girls 51, Trinity 33

NATCHEZ — Led by Karly Kliesch, Mitzi Morgan and Beverly Bailey, the Hillcrest Christian School Lady Cougars cruised to a 51-33 win over the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints Tuesday night.

Kliesch led all scorers with 16 points while Morgan had 15 points and Bailey added 12 points for the Class AAA Lady Cougars. The Lady Saints, on the other hand, struggled to find any kind of offensive rhythm throughout the game.

Hillcrest Christian led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and 27-20 at halftime. Trinity Episcopal was held to single-digit scoring in both the third and fourth quarters, allowing the Lady Cougars to pull away.

Caroline Ketchings was the only Lady Saints to end up in double figures as she finished with 14 points.

Terry 78, Natchez High 72 (OT)

TERRY — Ramanda Dace led four Terry players in double figures with 20 points as the host Lady Bulldogs upset the visiting Lady Bulldogs from Natchez High Tuesday night in a Division 6-5A game.

Natchez High trailed by four points going into the fourth quarter, but rallied to force overtime with a 24-20 advantage. But Terry dominated the overtime period and outscored Natchez High 12-6.

Keosha Bradley led Natchez High (10-3, 1-1) with a game-high 38 points and Jasmine Belton had 13 points. Cassie Berry finished with 17 points and Ashley Gresham had 14 points for Terry (6-3, 1-0).

Block 57, Tensas Parish 46

JONESVILLE, La. — Tyra Jefferson had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds as Block rallied in the second half to defeat Tensas Parish Tuesday night.

Block (7-1) trailed Tensas Parish 23-22 at halftime. But the Lady Bears responded in the second half, regaining the lead in the third quarter and then putting the game away by outscoring the Lady Panthers 21-13 in the fourth quarter.

Phyllicia Woods finished with 16 points and seven rebounds for Block.
