VIDALIA — A Monterey man who allegedly burglarized several vehicles locally was sentenced Wednesday.
Michael Cupstid, 616 Patsy Brown Road, Monterey, pleaded guilty to eight counts of simple burglary in Seventh Judicial District Court, and Judge Leo Boothe sentenced him to five years in the Louisiana Department of Corrections for each count, to be served concurrently.
Boothe then suspended the sentence and placed Cupstid on probation, with the special condition that he make restitution to the victims of the burglaries.
Cupstid had initially pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, but he withdrew that plea and entered the new one Wednesday.
Cupstid was arrested in August after a Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy reportedly smelled the odor of marijuana wafting from the vehicle Cupstid and Austin David Burr of Ferriday were in during a traffic stop, a report from the CPSO said at the time.
The suspects reportedly admitted to the burglary of five vehicles in the Monterey area as well as to burglaries in Ferriday, Adams County and Baton Rouge, the statement said.
Cupstid also received 24 months probation and a $500 fine for possession of marijuana.
