Ferriday runs past Rayville

RAYVILLE, La. — With the start of District 2-2A play still about a month away, the Ferriday Lady Trojans were looking for a signature win against a quality opponent and they got that chance Tuesday night against the Rayville Lady Hornets.

Even though the Lady Trojans went into the game with a 13-1 record, most of their wins since a 39-point loss to Class 5A West Monroe on Nov. 24 at the Ouachita Lady Lions Hoopfest have been lopsided. The closest win was by two points over Block on Dec. 5.

So it was fitting that these two rivals, both in and in recent years out of district, had yet another down-to-the-wire game. In the end, Ferriday rallied in the fourth quarter to take a 54-50 win for its 14th win in its first 15 games this season.

And it was a match-up of two coaches who know each other very well — Ferriday’s Lisa Abron and Rayville’s Damon West. The two have been coaching at their respected schools for almost the same amount of time.

“Every time we play them it’s very competitive,” Abron said. “The teams area always well-matched. So far I’ve beat him twice this year, so I’ve go the upper hand on him.”

But West’s Lady Hornets nearly got the better of Abron’s Lady Trojans on this occasion. Trailing 30-19 at halftime, Rayville changed its defense and allowed the Lady Hornets to not only get back in the game, but to take the lead as well.

“They put pressure on us and forced us to turn the ball over several times,” Abron said. “Fourth quarter I changed my defense and that allowed us to win it. It was a big test for us because we haven’t faced this adversity.”

Rayville outscored Ferriday 21-7 in the third quarter to take a 40-37 lead. But the Lady Trojans, led by Jasmine Upchurch and Jalessia Davis, responded with a 17-10 advantage in the fourth quarter. Upchurch led all scorers with 20 points and Davis finished with 17 points.

“I told them I wasn’t pleased with them turning the ball over in the third quarter, but I was pleased with the effort they showed in the fourth quarter. They never lost their composure,” Abron said.

Ashley Qualls led Rayville (4-4) with 13 points while Courtney Sheanette and Terkela Lofton each had 10 points.

Tensas Parish 59, Vidalia 50

ST. JOSEPH, La. — The Vidalia Lady Vikings got off to a terrible start against Tensas Parish and that proved to be the difference as the Lady Panthers held on for a nine-point win Tuesday night.

The first quarter did not turn out the way Vidalia head coach Damus Smith was hoping it would have. The Lady Vikings managed to score just two points and found themselves trailing by 21 points at the end of the quarter.

However, the Lady Vikings woke up in a big way in the second quarter. Led by Dejanae Harris and Erika Brown, they outscored the Lady Panthers 25-12 to cut the lead just eight points at halftime. Harris ended up with 17 points and Brown had 12 points.

Unfortunately, Vidalia (3-8) couldn’t sustain that momentum in the second half despite the fact that Tensas Parish (5-10) had just four players end up scoring. However, those four players did end up in double figures.

Tanchea Clark led the Lady Panthers with a game-high 20 points and Morgan Robinson chipped in with 14 points.

Jefferson County 55, Wilkinson County 51

FAYETTE — The Lady Tigers got off to a very slow start, but they closed the game with a strong finish to take a four-point win over Wilkinson County.

The Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 20-5 lead after one quarter and led 35-20 at halftime.

However, Jefferson County outscored Wilkinson County 19-8 in the third quarter to trim the deficit to four points going into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Tigers then completed the comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Wildcats 16-8.

Erin Wells and Charlita White led Jefferson County with 22 points each while Wilkinson County was led by Breshinna Day with 16 points and Tyeshia Lee with 15.

Block 102, Sicily Island 33

SICILY ISLAND, La. — The Block Lady Bears put on a clinic on both ends of the court en route to a 69-point win over the Lady Tigers Tuesday night. Block improved to 12-2 on the season while Sicily Island is now 1-12. No other information on the game was available.
