VIDALIA — A pair of lopsided games were the result on the first day of the Miss-Lou Classic at Vidalia.
On the Louisiana side of the Classic, the Bay St. Louis Lady Tigers faced the Vidalia Lady Vikings in what turned out to be a 71-16 thrashing for Bay High.
The Lady Tigers got out to a quick lead and held Vidalia scoreless until Tyshica Rodgers hit a three with 3:13 left in the first quarter.
The Lady Vikings made bad passes to each other and Bay High used that to their advantage en route to a 44-11 halftime lead.
“We didn’t come out ready to play,” Vidalia head coach Damus Smith said. “We created too many turnovers and we were not focused. Execution is a problem for us.”
Bay didn’t slow down and held Vidalia to only two points in the third while racking up 18 points of their own.
The Lady Tigers had five scorers in double digits while the Lady Vikings only had four total scorers.
“Alaina Burns transferred to Neville, so that hurt us tonight,” Smith said. “She won’t be with us anymore.”
Crystal Hawkins and Kristian Lyons both scored 16 to lead the Lady Tigers.
Skylar Marceleno was the leading scorer for Vidalia with five points.
Vidalia boys 76, Bay 48
The point margin wasn’t quite as large in the boys game, but Vidalia came out early and never backed down en route to their easy win over the Bay High Tigers.
Quatrell Thomas scored the first eight points for the Vikings (12-1) on two threes and a lay-up as a part of his 12-point first quarter performance.
Vidalia played the press and executed it almost to perfection as they limited the Tigers to five points in the second quarter.
“I was pleased with our effort,” Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders said. “We had good ball movement and found open shooters.”
The Vikings went on a 9-2 run to start the second half and continued to shut down the Tiger offense.
The Tiger offense decided to wake up in the fourth and managed to put 27 points on the scoreboard in the quarter but it wasn’t nearly enough to mount a comeback.
Nine different players scored for Vidalia in the game and the second string saw a good amount of playing time.
“It’s always good when we can put in the second string players,” Sanders said. “It helps us because we may need them down the stretch.”
Thomas led the Vikings with 21 points while teammates Torrey Dixon and Gary Stewart added 13 each.
“Our big three did good tonight,” Sanders said. “We need them to continue to put up double digits.”
Demitry Johnson was the leading scorer for Bay with 15 points.
The Vikings did a tremendous job defending Bay’s star player Daron Bell as he only scored six points in the entire contest.
Vidalia hosts Ocean Springs today at home.
