Vidalia — The Vidalia Vikings concluded the Miss-Lou Classic 2-0 as they handily defeated Class 5A Ocean Springs 79-62 Saturday at home.
The Vikings used the press to get off to a quick start and led 19-12 after the first quarter.
Ocean Springs fought back in the second though and cut the lead to two at the half.
“We have to work on getting the ball to the right shooters,” Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders said. “When we move the ball we get positive outcomes.”
The Greyhounds would tie the Vikings in the third quarter, but Vidalia finally woke up and took a seven-point lead into the fourth.
Both teams got themselves into foul trouble in the fourth quarter but it ultimately doomed the Greyhounds’ hopes of making a comeback.
Quatrell Thomas scored 10 of his 28 points in the fourth and Vidalia quickly built up a 20-point lead to put the game away for good.
“We are going to have to work on our interior defense,” Sanders said. “We need to defend better.”
Thomas led all scorers with 28 points while teammates Torrey Dixon and Gary Stewart each netted 16 points of their own.
Tre Brown led Ocean Springs with 15 points while his teammate Joe Morrow added 11.
Vidalia hosts Ferriday Monday at home.
