Jefferson Co. falls to Wilkinson Co. in own tourney

FAYETTE — The third and final day of the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament did not turn out well for the host school as both the Lady Tigers and Tigers lost to Region 7-3A rival Wilkinson County Saturday night.
In the girls’ game, the Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats defeated the Jefferson County Lady Tigers 53-43 thanks in large part to an 18-10 edge in the third quarter that allowed them to take a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Tyeshia Lee led Wilkinson County with 18 points and Tyeshia Harris chipped in with 10 points. Erin Wells led Jefferson County (6-8) with a game-high 19 points and Brittany Wyatt scored 13 points.
The Lady Wildcats ended up going a perfect 3-0 in tournament play while the Lady Tigers went 1-2.
In the boys’ game, Wilkinson County overcame a slow start by outscoring Jefferson County 16-4 in the second quarter as the Wildcats went on to defeat the Tigers 50-36 in the nightcap.
Jefferson County (3-7) cut Wilkinson County’s lead to seven points at the end of the third quarter, but the Wildcats answered by outscoring the Tigers 13-6 in the fourth quarter.
Wilkinson County was led by Kenny Harden, who led all scorers with 19 points. Terry Tenner led Jefferson County with 16 points.
The Tigers finished 1-2 in tournament action while the Wildcats went 2-1.
Hinds Agricultural High School’s girls’ team went 2-1 in the tournament after having to rally in the fourth quarter to defeat Prentiss 51-47 Saturday afternoon. Eugana Grigsby led the Lady Bulldogs (11-3) from Utica with 19 points. On the other hand, Prentiss’s Lady Bulldogs were winless in their three game.
The Hinds AHS Bulldogs went 3-0 on the boys’ side after defeating the Prentiss Bulldogs 77-59. Erik Burks had 25 points and Keeslee Stewart added 22 points for Hinds AHS (12-2). L. Magee had 24 points for Prentiss, which went 0-3.
