JACKSON — Today the Mississippi House of Representatives chose to raise taxes during one of the worst economic downturns in recent history. Representative Sam C. Mims, V, (R-McComb), responded, “As I have stated several times, raising taxes does not solve the state’s budget problems. When I was elected, I chose to try to be as consistent as possible by staying true to my convictions and maintaining my strong conservative beliefs, even during tough fiscal and political times.”
Mims further stated, “I personally understand the health policy issues concerning tobacco-related tax matters. The nation’s and Mississippi’s present recession, however, should allow us an opportunity to reassess the role of state government and the many programs we fund. Before we begin raising taxes on our citizens, let us take the more difficult approach by finding ways to reduce the waste in state government. A much easier, but unsound approach is to raise taxes by 450% on an unpopular product that is currently legal and is declining in revenue.”
“As this session goes forward”, Mims advised, “I will continue to stand firm in my beliefs and work hard for the citizens of Southwest Mississippi.”
