NATCHEZ — Local children got a big treat Friday night as the Harlem Ambassadors put on a show at the Cathedral School gymnasium to raise money for the Natchez Rotary Club and Natchez Boys and Girls Club.

The Ambassadors, a traveling basketball entertainment group, took on a group of locals known as the Natchez Dream Team in a charity game/dance contest.

The Ambassadors visited the Boys and Girls Club earlier in the day and many children from the club were invited to attend the event.

The money raised from the event will go into the Rotary Club’s general fund while the concession profits will go to the Boys and Girls Club.

Rotary Club president Gina Buckley said getting the Ambassadors to perform was a way to give something back to the community.

“We wanted to do something visible in the community and the Harlem Ambassadors were highly recommended by the other Rotary Clubs,” Buckley said. “It’s been a tremendous success. They are just a super group of people.”

Faye Minor, director of the Boys and Girls Club, said the club’s children were starstruck by the Ambassadors.

“The kids were so excited,” Minor said. “They got to meet the players and were just thrilled.”

Minor also played in the game as a member of the Dream Team, and scored the first basket for her squad.

“It was fun,” Minor said of the basketball action. “Those guys can go. They were too fast for us.”
