FERRIDAY — A Tuesday night fire claimed the life of a Ferriday man.
The Concordia Fire District No. 2 responded to the call of a house fire at 2150 Haphazard Road at 11:11 p.m., according to a statement from the fire district.
By the time the emergency responders arrived at the scene, the fire was fully involved and the roof of the structure was falling in.
Seven people reportedly lived in the structure at the time of the fire, and all but Prentiss Newbill, 53, escaped the blaze.
It appears Newbill reentered the house to make sure everyone else was out when the smoke overwhelmed him, Fire District No. 2 Chief Nolen Cothern said.
Newbill’s body was discovered at the back of the house.
The other victims included Newbill’s wife, 46, a 20-year-old son and four children ranging in age between 11 months and 17.
Newbill’s wife and one child were treated at Riverland Medical Center for burns to their hands.
The matter is still under investigation, and the fire district, the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshall are investigating.
