Vidalia — Three singles, a home run, and a lights-out pitching performance by Mason Ozburn sent the Vidalia Vikings to a 23-1 rout of the Monterey Wolves Monday evening in Vidalia.

Vidalia (1-0) exploded for eight runs in the second inning that was highlighted by Ozburn’s home run shot over the left-centerfield fence.

The Vikings then posted a six-run third inning to help secure their lead over the Wolves.

“There won’t be anymore blowouts this year,” Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “We have got a heck of a schedule for this season and we have to stay focused.”

Shaky defense didn’t help Monterey (0-1) as they went through three pitchers in the first three innings.

The Wolves also struggled to produce any offense and only recorded one hit in the game via a first inning single by Ross Lipsey.

“The kids kept their focus for the most part and they brought good discipline to the plate,” Hoffpauir said. “They ran the bases aggressively also.”

Mason Ozburn (1-0) collected the win for Vidalia while Tyler Trant (0-1) was handed the loss for Monterey.

Ozburn led Vidalia with a 4-for-5 performance that included three singles, a home run, and three runs batted in.

Ross Lipsey collected the lone hit for Monterey and finished 1-for-3 on the night.

Vidalia will travel to Mangham Friday to play in the Mangham tournament.
