Monterey beats Block in softball

MONTEREY — Ellen Bairnsfather allowed just one run on one hit in five innings of relief and was the game-winning run as the Monterey Lady Wolves defeated the Block Lady Bears 5-4 in nine innings Thursday afternoon.

Block sent the game into extra innings by scoring one run in the top of the seventh inning. Then in the bottom of the ninth, Bairnsfather singled and scored on Paige Bryan’s two-out double to win the game for Monterey (4-1).

Bairnsfather led the Lady Wolves’ 11-hit attack by going 3-for-5, while Taylor Morace and Ariel Hector each went 2-for-4.

Holli Clay was the starting pitcher for Monterey, but she struggled at times on the mound and gave up three runs on seven hits in four innings. She was relieved by Bairnsfather, who struck out eight and walked none.

Hannah (no last name given) led Block at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Franklin County 14, Cathedral 5

MEADVILLE — Desiree Buie hit two doubles and Katie Folman went 4-for-5 with a double to lead the Franklin County Lady Dawgs past the Cathedral Lady Green Wave Thursday night.

Franklin County (5-1) collected 16 hits in the game and took advantage of eight errors by a young Cathedral team. After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Dawgs took control of the game by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Melissa Cavin had a double and Mollie Devening went 2-for-3 for Cathedral (2-3), which had 10 hits in the game.

Kacey Smith had a triple and went 2-for-4 for Franklin County.
