Democrats try to circumvent Barbour

JACKSON (AP) — Mississippi House Democrats are trying to circumvent Gov. Haley Barbour to get all $2.8 billion of the state’s federal stimulus money.
Republican Barbour says he’ll reject about $56 million that would provide unemployment compensation to part-time workers. Mississippi only allows payments to people willing to work full-time, and Barbour says he doesn’t want to change state policies to get temporary money.
A resolution that passed the House Rules Committee on Tuesday says legislators could accept the money on behalf of the state. The resolution goes to a vote of the full House — but even if it passes, it’s likely to die in the Senate.
