MEADVILLE — Taylor Stewart had went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs as the Franklin County Lady Dawgs defeated the Brookhaven Lady Panthers 4-2 Saturday afternoon at the Franklin County Tournament.

Franklin County went 3-1 during the two-day tournament and improved to 10-3 on the season.

The Lady Dawgs defeated Bogue Chitto and Cathedral Friday but lost to Enterprise despite giving up just two hits.

Against Brookhaven, the Lady Dawgs trailed 2-1 after two and a half innings before scoring two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead and adding another run in the bottom of the fifth.

“I’m satisfied with the wins. We’re putting the ball in play,” Franklin County coach Dana Smith said. “From the North Pike game last week, our pitching’s improving. But we’ve got to keep our walks down.”

Smith noted that Destiney Dedeaux did a good job on the mound against Brookhaven in picking up the win and that Kacey Smith nearly pitched a no-hitter against Bogue Chitto.

“Overall, our hit count was very low,” coach Smith said.

Natchez High, however, didn’t fare so well in its two games on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Seminary 14-4 before being shut out by Vicksburg 17-0.

Smith said that the tournament itself was a huge success and was more than pleased with the turnout.

“We had one of the largest crowds ever. There were a lot of close games,” she said.
