NATCHEZ — Brian Isaac hit a home run and Javon Washington had a solid complete-game performance on the mound as the Natchez High Bulldogs defeated the Port Gibson Blue Waves 12-4 Saturday afternoon.
Isaac was the only multiple hitter for either team, with two hits on three at-bats. Washington gave up four runs on three hits, walked six, struck out nine and delivered at the plate with a double.
“Javon had a good outing, but it wasn’t one of his better outings to me. He can do better,” Natchez High head coach Charlie Williams said. “Due to some suspensions and some players out of town, we were forced to pitch him.”
Natchez High (6-3-1) scored 10 runs in the first two innings and looked like it was well on its way to 10-run ruling Port Gibson. But the Blue Waves scored four runs in the top of the third inning to make it a 10-4 game. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but was not able to score after that.
“The hitting is coming around. We’ve been working on our hitting the last couple of days,” Williams said. The Bulldogs ended up with 11 hits in the game and took advantage of five Port Gibson errors.
Williams said he was pleased with the fact that his team did not commit a single error.
“Maybe because they weren’t hitting it very well. We were able to make the plays,” Williams added. “Even when (Washington) walked someone, they made some base-running errors.”
Even though Jimmy Hicks was the losing pitcher, he had a double for Port Gibson.
Monterey goes 2-1, Block goes 3-0 at Monterey Tripleheader
MONTEREY — The Monterey Wolves won both of their games Saturday afternoon at the Monterey Baseball Tripleheader, defeating the Georgetown Bulldogs 11-0 and the Harrisonburg Bulldogs 5-2.
In the win over Georgetown, Monterey scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and seven runs in the bottom of the third. Taylor Campbell was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in. The Wolves collected nine hits in that game.
Winning pitcher Hunter Frey pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.
Monterey had a tougher time against Harrisonburg, trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the second inning. But the Wolves tied the game in the their half of the second and scored one run each over the next three innings.
And for the second straight game, Monterey (3-4) had nine hits. Ross Lipsey went 2-for-3 with a double, Chance Cooper was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and winning pitcher Tyler Trant was a perfect 3-for-3.
“We hit the ball much better all weekend. Even against Block (Friday night), we hit the ball but we hit it right at them,” Monterey head coach Eric Richard said. “Our bats improved. Our pitching improved. We’re still making errors, but we’re minimizing them so we don’t give up that big inning.”
Block ended up going undefeated in its three games in the two-day event after routing Georgetown 17-1 and holding on for a 7-5 win over Harrisonburg Saturday morning to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Chase Duncan was the winning pitcher for Block in the first game and Justin Winborne struck out 12 batters to pick up the win on the mound for the Bears in the second game.
