Jury to seek grant for old courthouse roof

Vidalia — Vidalia’s old parish courthouse won’t be getting a new roof anytime soon.
On Monday evening, the Concordia Parish Police Jury voted to postpone replacing the roof.
Instead of repairing the roof immediately, they’ll attempt to get a grant from the Delta Regional Authority.
Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington said the roof is currently patched well enough to withstand heavy rains.
“But for how long I don’t know,” he said.
Ferrington, after speaking with FEMA representatives, said he believes the work done to the roof will be eligible for reimbursement as a result of Hurricane Gustav.
The jury unanimously voted to withhold work and pursue the grant.
Juror Randy Temple said he felt it would not be prudent to fund the project, estimated at $140,000, if a grant could be acquired.
Temple also raised questions as to when funding from the federal stimulus package could be arriving in Concordia Parish.
Ferrington said while he has made inquiries on the funding, he was unable to find any answers.
“I don’t think anyone knows,” he said.
The jury did not discuss any specific funding requests.
In other news, the jury accepted a bid from a Texas-based company for a wood chipper.
The machine will be purchased for approximately $36,000.
