HARRISONBURG, La. — Maggie Kirby’s triple with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning brought in Ashlyn Boothe with the game-winning run as Harrisonburg rallied to defeat Monterey 5-4 Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Wolves had a 4-1 lead after four and a half innings, but the Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 4-4 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the seventh, Boothe got on with a base hit and then went to second before Kirby won the game with her three-bagger.
Boothe, Kirby and Taylor Shepard each went 2-for-4 to lead Harrisonburg at the plate.
Harrisonburg remained undefeated with the win and improved to 6-0. Monterey dropped to the .500 mark on the season with a 6-6 record.
It was a tough loss for Monterey after the Lady Wolves had scored two runs in the top of the fourth and added another run in the top of the fifth for the three-run lead. But Harrisonburg’s Katie Johnson did her job by keeping Monterey off the scoreboard in the final two innings. Johnson was the winning pitcher as she allowed five hits, struck out six and walked two.
All five of the Lady Wolves’ hits in the game were singles. Losing pitcher Ellen Bairnsfather allowed five runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out just two.
