Natchez — The Natchez chapter of the Alcorn State University National Alumni Association was named the top chapter in the country in terms of membership at the 32nd annual mid-winter conference in Houston on Feb. 26 – March 1.
The Natchez chapter was also one of three chapters recognized for fundraising. More than 800 Alcornites attended the meeting.
Henry Houze, local chapter president and representative at the conference, reported on its many highlights. In a one-on-one interview, Dr. George Ross, the new Alcorn State president, outlined his vision for the university.
United States congressional representatives Al Green and Shelia Jackson-Lee made appearances welcoming the group to Houston.
Businessman Willie Alexander reviewed and signed his new book “The Promise Land: Implications for Black History,”
Attorney James McDonald, national president of the association, delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the bond between the association and the university and challenging Alcornites to work for excellence in education. The ASU Alumni Foundation and the association presented a $50,000 gift to Alcorn State.
According to Houze, the goals of the Natchez chapter are to contribute to the university by recruiting students and assisting them through scholarships and to support the community. Last year, seven areas student received scholarships. Michael WInn serves as the chapter’s fundraising chairman. The membership committee members are Artis Butler, Lillie Hoskin and Henry Houze.
