City’s goal must stay consistent

The owners of Danny’s Lounge in Vidalia are getting what they asked for — another chance.

Their specific request was for a meeting with the city’s leaders, which is set for Thursday.

The public meeting follows a closed meeting between the owners, the mayor, two aldermen and the police chief.

This second meeting will include the full board, and likely a room full of Danny’s supporters.

The topic of discussion will be the renewal of the bar’s liquor license that aldermen denied in December, saying too much crime happened at Danny’s.

We are glad the Vidalia mayor and aldermen have worked to hear the concerns of the local business owners. It’s always good to communicate and hear each other out.

But we hope the city’s leaders aren’t ready to give an inch on their previously stated goal — public safety.

Danny’s — whether in the building, in the parking lot or in the street out front — has been a hotbed of criminal activity in recent years. People have been injured, cut and shot at Danny’s.

No city ever wants to shut down business. It goes against the very nature of government. But public safety must come first.

Before the aldermen re-issue a liquor license, they must be sure they aren’t signing someone’s death certificate.
