BROOKHAVEN — Mollie Devening threw a one-hit ballgame through five and one-third innings as Cathedral defeated West Lincoln 8-6 Tuesday afternoon, the Lady Green Wave’s first softball win over the Lady Bears in five years.
Cathedral (4-12, 1-2) needed Devening’s performance on the mound to overcome six errors as it nearly blew an 8-1 lead late in the game.
The Lady Bears trailed 8-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth before they scored four runs to make it an 8-6 game. But they would get no closer than that.
Beth Fortenbery, Ginny Daggett and Kimble Devening each had two hits, and Mollie Devening had a double for the Lady Green Wave.
Forest 8, Monterey 0
MONTEREY — Jessie Paris threw a complete-game one-hitter and Forest scored all of its runs in the top of the third inning as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Monterey Lady Wolves Tuesday afternoon in the District 3-B opener for both teams.
The only hit Monterey (10-9, 0-1) got off of Paris was a single by Casey White. Except for the third inning, Holli Clay held her own against Forest (14-4, 1-0), which had four multiple hitters. Helmer went 2-for-3 with a double and Reardon also went 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Bulldogs, who had 10 hits in the game.
North Pike 3, Franklin County 2
SUMMIT — A controversial call — or in this case non-call — by an umpire allowed two runs to score in the bottom of the fourth inning as North Pike defeated Franklin County Tuesday night in a Division 7-3A game.
A North Pike base-runner ran over Franklin County’s second baseman, but the umpire did not call interference and the Lady Jaguars wound up taking a 3-1 lead.
“Bad call by the umpire made the outcome of the ball game when it should be on the kids,” Franklin County head coach Dana Smith said. “It’s just sad that a decision comes down to an umpire making a call.”
North Pike (2-3 in division play) took a 1-0 lead after one inning, but Franklin County tied the game on an RBI single by Katie Foreman in the top of the fourth. The Lady Bulldogs got an RBI single from Desiree Buie in the top of the sixth, but they could not get over the hump.
“We left too many runners on base. I think we had something like 13 runners left on base,” Smith said.
Franklin County (14-7, 2-1) had 10 hits in the game to just six for North Pike. However, neither team had an extra-base hit.
