Trinity falls hard to River Oaks

MONROE, La. — The conditions for a baseball game were less than ideal in Trinity Episcopal’s doubleheader loss to River Oaks.

But Saints coach Matt Mason said that was no excuse for his team to fall 7-2, 7-6 in two games.

“We didn’t play well today at all,” Mason said. “We didn’t come focused, and we didn’t do the little things we needed to do to win.”

The Saints went four scoreless innings in the first game before putting up two runs in the fifth.

But River Oaks scored three runs in the third, another in the fourth and three more in the sixth for the first-game win.

Mason said the problems, however, weren’t on the mound.

“I thought we pitched well today, but our big problem was at the plate,” he said. “We didn’t move runners when we had a chance to, and we didn’t show up on two strikes.”

Although Trinity put up six runs in the second game and only lost by one, Mason said that game was no better.

The Saints had five errors in game two, and no Trinity player recorded multiple hits in either game.

Daniel Dunaway was the only Saint with an extra-base hit, a double in the second game.

Jordan Dossett recorded the loss for the Saints in game two, although he only pitched one inning.

“We brought Jordan in in a tough situation,” Mason said. “The conditions weren’t great to pitch today, but that’s no excuse. We’ve got to battle to get it done, and we sure didn’t get it done today.”

The Saints fell to 8-6 on the season and 4-2 in District 3-AA play, while River Oaks is now 7-5 overall and 3-4 in district.

Trinity will play Prairie View Monday in Bastrop, La., before hosting the Spartans in a doubleheader Wednesday.

“We stunk in both games today,” Mason said. “We didn’t come to play baseball and we lost two big district games that could’ve put us in the driver’s seat. Now we’re going to really have to fight to stay at the top of the district.”
