Pitching dooms Vikings

BUNKIE, La. — The Vidalia baseball team struggled to find its rhythm on the mound Thursday in a 10-2 loss to Bunkie.

The Vikings gave up two runs in the first inning and two more in the second before the game completely got out of hand.

“In the bottom of the fourth, they broke it open with a three-run home run by Tyler Gagnard,” Vidalia coach Johnny Hoffpauir said. “That was probably the back breaker. It was on a 3-2 count with two outs, and it was probably my mistake for pitching to the guy.”

The Vikings used a total of three pitchers in the game, a recurring problem for Vidalia as it makes its way through the end of district play.

Mason Ozburn (3-5) took the loss.

Hoffpauir said it’s been difficult to find a combination that works.

“Every one of our pitchers is throwing 50-plus pitches in two innings of work,” he said. “So we’re not getting many innings out of them anyway. We’re just pitching by committee, and it didn’t quite work tonight.”

Vidalia did make an early charge, tying the game in the top of the second inning on a two-run home run by Seth Barlow.

But that was all the Vikings would do all night, as their bats were mostly silenced.

Bunkie allowed just five Vidalia hits all night.

“We didn’t help ourselves much with the bat,” Hoffpauir said. “And we didn’t give ourselves much chance to win. We put a lot of runners on base with walks and with pitching behind the count.”

Vidalia (8-10, 3-2) will host Marksville on Monday, with the junior varsity playing at 4 p.m. and varsity taking the mound at 6 p.m.
