NATCHEZ — If putting those tax checks in the mail Wednesday hurts just a little too much, join Ken Rogers on the steps of Natchez City Hall.

Rogers and countless others across the country will be having a T.E.A. Party.

Rogers said the Taxed Enough Already Party is meant to send a message to the nation’s president and lawmakers.

“Common Democrat policy is tax and spend,” Rogers said. “But we don’t want new taxes.”

Rogers said plans in Congress, as he understands them, would increase the income tax and possibly bring back the death tax, also called the inheritance tax.

And locally, plans that call for an increase in property tax also have Rogers concerned.

Rogers is quick to point out that he’s not opposed to paying taxes, he just doesn’t want more.

“I want to pay my fair share so the government can operate,” he said. “But they’re not here to make money. That’s not their job.”

And Rogers doesn’t think he’s alone in his apprehension to see more taxes become law.

“I want to help needy people and fund the military,” Rogers said of taxes he supports. “But we’re concerned about more taxes coming.”

Rogers said he’s already been in contact with at least a half-dozen people that plan to be at the protest.

Rogers said he views the T.E.A. Party as a chance for like-minded people to come together and discuss what they perceive as a problem.

And Rogers and those on the steps of City Hall won’t be alone.

The Web site that advocates the event, www.theteapartyday.com, lists 2,000 cities that will participate in protests Wednesday.

Rogers’ event starts at 2 p.m.
