FERRIDAY — A Ferriday man accused of burglary learned the hard way you can’t outrun your own genetic material.

Donald Ray Jefferson, 50, 118 Seventh St., was arrested Tuesday on charges of simple burglary of a business. The crime occurred nearly a year ago.

Jefferson allegedly burglarized an insurance business in the 1000 block of Third Street in July 2008, Assistant Police Chief Johnny Evans said.

While in the process of gaining entry into the building, Jefferson allegedly broke a window and cut himself in the arm.

“There was blood all over the building,” Evans said.

Because Jefferson had allegedly gotten angry with the owner of the business about money the day prior to the burglary, when Jefferson was seen with a large bandage on his arm following the burglary, police obtained a warrant for a DNA sample, Evans said.

Police also collected blood from the scene of the crime.

The lab just confirmed the DNA match between Jefferson and the blood at the scene of the crime, Evans said.

“Sometimes these things take a long time,” he said.

Jefferson was detained on a $60,000 bond Wednesday.
