NEW ORLEANS (AP) — State health officials have begun distributing antiviral drugs to points around Louisiana in case they are needed to treat possible swine flu cases.

Health department spokeswoman Jolie Adams said National Guard personnel were delivering the drugs — more than 100,000 courses of treatment — to points in the state’s nine public health regions.

Louisiana has not had a confirmed case of swine flu so far, but tests in eight possible cases are pending at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Results are expected as early as Saturday.

Adams says the antiviral drugs will be available with a doctor’s prescription to people who have tested positive for Type A influenza, which can include swine flu.
