VIDALIA — The Monday shooting that sent a Vidalia man to the hospital may have been the result of a multiple person fight, Police Chief Ronnie G. “Tapper” Hendricks said.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., 23-year-old Cameron Brown was shot in the right thigh with what was apparently a high caliber weapon, Hendricks said.

“They believe it was a high-caliber weapon because the bullet passed through (Brown’s) leg,” Hendricks said.

The police have not yet recovered the weapon.

After Brown was initially transported to Natchez Regional Medical Center he was taken to Jackson for surgery, Hendricks said.

The investigation began when the hospital contacted the police and told them they were treating a gunshot victim who said he was shot in Vidalia, Hendricks said.

During the course of questioning, the victim and other witnesses have given conflicting stories about what happened, Hendricks said.

“It could have been some type of altercation between two or more subjects when this gunfire was exchanged,” Hendricks said.

“I don’t know if somebody shot him or he shot himself.”

The incident, which happened on the levee at the end of John Dale Drive, does not appear to be gang-related, Hendricks said.

The investigation is ongoing.
