Bridges announced as speaker

LORMAN, — Charlie H. Bridges will deliver the commencement address to degree recipients at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jacks Spinks Stadium.

Bridges, a native of Mendenhall, received his early education at Harper High School in Mendenhall. In May 1974, he received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Alcorn State University, where he graduated cum laude.

Bridges, who was an ROTC student during his academic tenure at Alcorn, was commissioned into the United States Army upon graduation. He was accepted immediately into medical school and in 1978 received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is the proud and loving father of four children. His daughter Catherine is currently enrolled as a sophomore nursing major at Alcorn State.

Bridges completed his internship at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colo.’ and residency in Urology at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash.

Bridges is a practicing physician in the field of urology.

From 1983 to 1987, he served as chief of urology at Blanchfield Army Hospital and has been in private practice in Baton Rouge for over 20 years.

He is Chief of Urology at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He has published papers in several medical journals. As a result of his outstanding contributions to Alcorn State University and the world community, he was inducted into the 2003 Thurgood Marshall Foundation, and was a recipient of the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc.

Since graduating in 1974, Dr. Bridges has been an annual supporter of the Alcorn State University Foundation, Inc. Bridges is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
