BATON ROUGE (AP) — A House committee has approved what amounts to a tax increase on Louisiana homeowners.
The Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday approved Rep. Mickey Guillory’s bill to increase an assessment that homeowners already pay to fund LSU’s fire training institute.
The Eunice Democrat argued that failure to fund the institute would cause policyholders’ rates to go up. But several lawmakers warned that the bill faces a possible veto from Gov. Bobby Jindal, who has said he opposes any tax increase.
