Lucy Stephens

UNION CHURCH — Memorial services for Lucy Mae Stephens, 79, a resident of Extendicare Health & Rehab Center in Dothan, Ala., who died March 19, 2009, will be at 11 a.m. today at Union Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Stephens was born Jan. 29, 1930, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Victor Hugo and Mattie Ivey Stephens. She attended school at Union Church and was known for her humor and wit. After graduation from Union Church High School in Jefferson County, she moved to Natchez and resided at “Dutch Yawn’s Boarding House” on North Pearl Street for many years while she worked for Walgreens and Holsum Bakery.
She moved to Dothan in the late 1980s and cared for her mother who lived there. After her mother died, Lucy became ill and was confined to a nursing facility for the past eight to nine years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Kenneth Stephens of West Memphis, Ark., and Ray “Buck Stephens” Mervin of Washington; two sisters, Bessie Sproles of Wisner, La., and Mildred McCurley of Hazlehurst. Mildred died on the same day as Lucy, one hour after Lucy died.
Survivors include Jean Brown of Natchez, Elaine Rutland of Brookhaven, Sherwin Stephens and wife, Mary, of Red Lick, Jessie Locke and husband, Morris, of Dothan, John Garrett Stephens and wife, Elaine, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
