JACKSON (AP) — A Hinds County judge has agreed to dismiss a capital murder charge against Sharrod Ray Moore in the 13-year-old slaying of a Jackson police officer.
Circuit Judge Swan Yerger said Wednesday he would reserve a ruling until a later date on whether the charges can be brought up again against Moore if new evidence becomes available.
Prosecutors told Yerger that the only witness they had to tie Moore to the November 1995 slaying of Patrolman Robert J. Washington wasn’t credible.
The 31-year-old Moore was freed from jail last Friday. Moore had been scheduled for trial on May 27.
Authorities say Washington’s body was found in a field off U.S. Highway 80 in west Jackson.
