NATCHEZ — Renee Cavin does not consider herself to be a particularly lucky person. And she does not make a habit of entering television contests.

But the Ultimate Idol Experience contest she saw advertised television was too good to pass up. And thanks to that whim, Cavin and her husband Ken are enjoying an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles.

The couple attended American Idol Tuesday night, and watched the contestants perform in the finale.

“My husband and I are big fans of the show,” Cavin said. “I saw it advertised during the show on Fox 40 out of Jackson. It was a one-time shot to enter and my husband and I each entered once.”

And since the prize was a trip for two, the Cavins agreed on who to take before submitting their entry.

“We made an agreement that if I won, I would take him and if he won he would take me,” she said.

But, she said even with an agreement in place, she never thought either of them would get the winning phone call.

“They called me on the day they had the drawing,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was someone who was playing a joke, but no, it was the real thing.”

The highlight of Cavin’s trip was getting to actually see the show she watches faithfully in person, but for her husband Ken, the highlight was better than that.

He was able to meet Idol runner-up Adam Lambert the next day.

“We were watching the Fox station and they were interviewing (the contestants) live and my husband said ‘I bet they are over there right now,’” Cavin said. “And where we are staying is really close to the Nokia Theater so he ran over there.”

Once there he was able to talk to Lambert “for a good while” get an autograph and take a picture.

This trip is the Cavins first trip to California and they are enjoying all the golden state has to offer.

“(Wednesday) night we went to see Jimmy Kimmel, and he had Ben Stiller on and that was really fun,” Renee Cavin said. “We are touring all the different areas and went to Hollywood and did the tour of stars homes.”
